The Home Outage Kit: What to Actually Buy (and Skip)

Build the right power outage kit: the essential list with real products categories, what's overrated, and storage that works.

Outage-kit lists online swing between three flashlights and a doomsday bunker. Here's the practical middle: what a family actually uses in a 1-to-5-day outage, what's overrated, and how to store it so it works in year three.

The core kit

Water (one gallon/person/day, 3+ days), shelf-stable food and a manual opener, LED flashlights and headlamps with spare batteries, a battery bank per phone plus one, battery/crank weather radio, first aid, medications buffer, cash small bills, and printed contacts and documents. Add: battery CO alarm, glow sticks for kids' rooms, and a cooler.

Overrated vs underrated

Overrated: candles (fire risk, weak light), gas-station runs mid-storm, and gadget multitools nobody practices with. Underrated: headlamps (hands matter), a written who-to-call sheet, duct tape and contractor bags, and pre-frozen water jugs doing double duty as fridge thermal mass and drinking water.

Storage and rotation

One labeled bin per floor plus a grab bag by the exit; check batteries and rotate food each daylight-saving change (the calendar trick that actually works). The kit's job is being findable in the dark by a stressed person: practice one blackout dinner a year and the plan becomes muscle memory.

Quick Answers

How much water do we really need?

One gallon per person per day, three days minimum, a week where outages run long. Pets count. Frozen jugs do double duty.

Are candles okay?

Skip them: house-fire data during outages is grim. LED lanterns and headlamps are cheap, safe, and better light.

What's the one upgrade beyond the kit?

A battery power station: silent indoor power for phones, medical devices, and the fridge overnight, the bridge between a kit and a generator.
