Generator Sizing for Well Pumps: The Surge That Fools Everyone

Well pump generator sizing: locked-rotor surge math by horsepower, why undersized units trip, and rural whole-home numbers.

Well pumps are the sizing trap: a modest 1HP pump that runs at 2,000W demands 4,000W-plus for the second it starts, and a 2HP pump can spike past 8,000W. Undersized generators trip exactly when rural homes need water most: here's the math done right.

Locked-rotor reality

Submersible pump motors draw 3 to 6 times running current at start (the locked-rotor amps on the motor plate). Rules of thumb: 1/2HP ≈ 3,000W start, 1HP ≈ 4,000 to 5,000W, 1.5HP ≈ 6,000W, 2HP ≈ 8,000W-plus. The generator must supply that spike on top of whatever else is running when the pressure switch clicks.

Sizing the rural whole-home

House base load plus the pump surge plus 25% headroom: a typical rural home with a 1HP well lands at 20 to 24kW, and the pump is frequently the deciding load, ahead of the A/C. Soft-start kits exist for pumps too and can shave the spike where wiring allows.

Get the plate, get it right

Text photos of the pump's motor plate (or the pressure-tank control box) and your panel to 816-785-1268: locked-rotor amps are printed right there, and the free sizing takes minutes. Rural water is not the load to guess on.

Quick Answers

Will a 12kW generator run a well pump?

A 1HP pump alone, yes; the pump plus a whole rural home, usually not gracefully. The surge on top of base load is what trips small units.

Can two pumps share one generator?

Yes with staggered pressure switches or load management so they can't start simultaneously: a standard rural spec detail we handle in sizing.

What about constant-pressure pumps?

Variable-frequency-drive pumps soft-start beautifully (tiny surges) but are electronics-sensitive: they want clean generator power, which modern units with low THD provide. Tell us the model.
