Virtually every municipality in our eight states requires permits for a standby generator: electrical (the transfer switch), plumbing/mechanical (the gas line), and sometimes zoning review for placement. This is normal, priced into quotes, and handled by the licensed contractor, not you.
What gets permitted and inspected
The transfer switch at your service entrance (the safety-critical part), the gas line tap and run, the pad placement relative to openings and lot lines, and in some counties, noise and flood-zone elevation. Inspection sign-off is also what your homeowner's insurance and future home sale will want to see.
Timelines and costs
Permit issuance runs from a day to three weeks depending on the city; fees typically total $100 to $500 and appear as line items in the installation quote. Storm-season backlogs are real: this is another reason to buy in the off-season.
