Backup Power for the Home Office: Never Drop the Call Again

Home office backup power: UPS-to-battery-to-generator strategy, keeping internet alive, and what remote workers actually need.

Remote work turned outages into lost income: a dropped client call or a bricked workstation costs real money. The good news is that home-office loads are small, so protecting them is cheap relative to whole-home backup. Here's the stack that works.

The three-tier stack

Tier one: a UPS under the desk carries the computer through the first seconds and surge events. Tier two: a battery power station (EcoFlow class) runs the desk plus the router for hours, silently. Tier three, for outage-prone areas: whole-home standby power so HVAC, lighting, and the rest of the workday survive multi-day events.

The forgotten load: your internet

Your modem, router, and (if fiber) the ONT together draw 15 to 40W; put them on the battery tier and your connection survives as long as the provider's node has power. Cable and fiber nodes often ride through short outages; a phone hotspot is the layer-four fallback.

Tax and practical notes

Home-office backup equipment may have deduction implications for self-employed workers; ask your tax professional. Practically: label the circuits, test quarterly during a coffee break, and if you bill by the hour, price the system against one lost week and it usually approves itself.

Quick Answers

What size battery runs a home office?

A laptop-plus-monitor desk with networking draws 100 to 200W, so a 1kWh station runs a full workday. Desktops with big GPUs can triple that; size from your actual gear.

Generator or battery for remote work?

Battery first: silent, instant, indoor-friendly. Add the generator when your area's outages run past a workday or the rest of the house matters too.

Will video calls survive the switchover?

On a UPS or battery tier, yes: transfer is instant. A standby generator's 10 to 30 second start will drop the call once; the battery tier is what prevents even that.
