Here's the spec sheet fine print that ruins undersized installs across the Mountain West: air-cooled generators lose roughly 3% of rated output per 1,000 feet above sea level. In New Mexico, that's not a footnote: it's a full size class. We built our New Mexico practice on getting this right.
The math by city
Albuquerque, 5,300 ft: a '22kW' delivers ~18.5kW (16% gone). Santa Fe, 7,200 ft: ~17.4kW (21% gone). Ruidoso, 6,900 ft: ~17.6kW. Las Cruces, 3,900 ft: ~19.4kW. The generator isn't defective: thinner air means less oxygen per intake stroke, so every naturally aspirated engine on earth does this. Sea-level sizing charts simply lie at elevation.
What correct sizing looks like
Take the size your loads demand at sea level, then divide by your elevation's output factor: an Albuquerque home needing 20kW of true output should be quoted at 24 to 26kW nameplate. High-altitude carburetion/jetting kits (fitted at install per manufacturer spec) keep the engine running clean up here: they're about combustion quality, not recovering the lost power.
