What is a Transfer Switch and Why Do You Need One?

Updated February 2026 • 5 min read

A transfer switch is the brain of your backup power system. Here's what it does and why it's essential.

What Does a Transfer Switch Do?

A transfer switch safely connects your generator to your home's electrical system. It:

  • Isolates your home from the utility grid during an outage
  • Prevents backfeed that could electrocute utility workers
  • Switches power sources between utility and generator
  • Protects your generator from damage when utility power returns

Why It's Required

Transfer switches are required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) for any generator connected to your home's wiring. Without one:

  • You could electrocute utility workers repairing lines
  • Your generator could be damaged when power returns
  • Your home's wiring could be damaged
  • Your installation won't pass inspection

How Automatic Transfer Switches Work

  1. Monitors utility power continuously
  2. Detects outage within seconds
  3. Signals generator to start
  4. Waits for stable power from generator
  5. Transfers load from utility to generator
  6. Monitors for utility return
  7. Transfers back when utility is stable
  8. Shuts down generator after cooldown

This entire process happens automatically—even if you're asleep or away from home.

Whole-House vs Load-Managed

Whole-house transfer switch: Powers your entire electrical panel. Requires a larger generator.

Load-managed transfer switch: Powers selected circuits only. Allows a smaller generator to prioritize critical loads.

What's Included With Your Generator?

Most standby generators include an automatic transfer switch in the package. During installation, we:

  • Mount the ATS next to your electrical panel
  • Connect it to your panel's main breaker
  • Wire it to your generator
  • Program transfer settings
  • Test the complete system
