Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about generators and our services.
What size generator do I need for my home?
Most homes need 14-22kW. A 14kW generator powers essential circuits (lights, fridge, sump pump, some AC). A 22kW generator can power most whole homes including central AC. We provide free in-home assessments to calculate your exact needs based on your electrical panel, square footage, and must-have circuits.
How much does a whole house generator cost installed?
Installed home standby generators typically range from $8,000-$15,000 depending on size (14kW-26kW) and brand (Generac, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton). As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Power Up Generator Solutions offers fair, transparent pricing to everyone—no commissions, no upsells. This can save you $2,000-$4,000 compared to for-profit dealers.
How long does generator installation take?
Typically 2-3 weeks from consultation to completion. This includes: initial assessment (1 day), permit acquisition (3-7 days depending on municipality), equipment delivery (3-5 days), and installation day (1 day). We handle all permits, electrical work, gas connections, and final inspections.
Do you offer financing for generators?
Yes! We offer flexible financing starting at just $25/month with approved credit. About 50% of our customers choose financing. Options include 0% interest for 12 months, low-interest plans up to 84 months, and no money down programs. We work with multiple lenders to find the best rate for your situation.
What generator brands do you install?
We're factory-certified dealers and installers for Generac (America's #1 brand), Briggs & Stratton, Cummins, Champion, and DuroMax. We also install Tesla Powerwall battery backup systems and Smartflower Solar. Our technicians are recertified annually on all brands.
How often does a generator need maintenance?
Annual maintenance is recommended for home standby generators. This includes oil and filter changes, spark plug inspection, battery testing, transfer switch testing, and full system inspection. Most customers stay with us for 5+ years for maintenance. We also recommend running your generator for 15-20 minutes weekly to keep it ready.
What is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit generator dealer?
Power Up Generator Solutions is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Tax ID: 33-1354240). Unlike for-profit dealers who mark up equipment 30-50%, we believe in fair, transparent pricing—no commissions, no upsells. Our mission is to make backup power accessible to all communities, especially vulnerable populations. Every purchase supports our charitable programs.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Kansas City metro (Missouri and Kansas sides), Springfield MO, Tulsa OK, Oklahoma City OK, and Tampa FL including surrounding counties. In Kansas City, we cover Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit, Independence, Liberty, Blue Springs, and more. Contact us to confirm service in your specific area.
How does a home standby generator work?
A home standby generator connects permanently to your electrical panel and natural gas or propane line. When power goes out, the automatic transfer switch detects the outage within seconds and signals the generator to start. Power is restored to your home in 10-30 seconds—automatically, even if you're not home. When utility power returns, the system automatically switches back and shuts down.
What's the difference between a portable and standby generator?
Portable generators ($500-$2,000) require manual setup, gasoline refueling, and extension cords. They power limited items and can't run central AC. Home standby generators ($8,000-$15,000 installed) start automatically, connect to natural gas/propane (no refueling), power your whole home including AC, and work even when you're away. For whole-home protection, standby generators are the better investment.
Will a generator increase my home value?
Yes! Studies show home standby generators can increase home value by 3-5% and make homes sell faster. In areas with frequent outages, generators are increasingly expected by buyers. They're especially valuable for homes with sump pumps, medical equipment needs, or home offices. The ROI is strong considering the protection and convenience benefits.
How loud is a home standby generator?
Modern home standby generators run at 60-70 decibels—about as loud as a normal conversation or window AC unit. Generac's QuietTest mode runs weekly tests at reduced RPM for even quieter operation. Generators are typically installed on the side of the house away from bedrooms and meet all local noise ordinances.
What happens if my generator needs repair?
Power Up Generator Solutions offers fast emergency repair service. During power outages, we typically respond within 15 minutes. Our factory-trained technicians (average 15 years experience) can diagnose and repair all major brands. We stock common parts for quick repairs. Most issues are resolved same-day.
Do I need a permit to install a generator?
Yes, generator installations require electrical and gas permits in most municipalities. Power Up handles all permit applications, inspections, and approvals as part of our installation service. Permit costs vary by city ($100-$500) and are included in our quotes. We ensure your installation meets all local codes.
Can a generator power my air conditioner?
Yes, but size matters. A 14kW generator can power a small central AC (up to 3 tons) plus essential circuits. A 22kW generator can power most residential central AC systems (up to 5 tons) plus your whole home. We calculate your AC's starting watts and running watts to recommend the right generator size.
What's the warranty on a new generator?
Warranties vary by brand: Generac offers 5-year limited warranty (transferable), Briggs & Stratton offers 6-year limited warranty, Cummins offers 5-year comprehensive warranty. Extended warranties up to 10 years are available. All warranties cover parts and labor for defects. Proper annual maintenance is required to maintain warranty coverage.
